MSc Sustainable Business Leadership

The objective of this module is to provide students with an insight into business analytics and an ability to apply key elements of the analytical process (i.e. data extraction, transformation, analysis, and communication) with a special emphasis on common areas of application in Sustainability.

Students will gain theoretical knowledge, technical aptitude, and also further their analytical thinking with an ability to transform quantitative and qualitative data into insights which support informed decision making.

This module is designed to help students develop and demonstrate the skills required to carry out a substantial individual project in a chosen aspect of business and sustainability. Core skills for conducting the individual project are first developed through guided online learning. At the start of the research project students are allocated a supervisor who will work with the student on a one-to-one basis and may also facilitate some small group meetings in addition to one-to-one supervision.

The module provides an initial understanding of core concepts related to leadership and change management. Following on from this students will develop their knowledge, skills and insights through investigating and critically analysing key issues associated with leading and managing sustainability related change. The module enables students to develop professionally through structured self-reflection focusing on their ability to affect change and subsequently identifying areas for ongoing personal development. The module makes significant use of case studies from a variety of organisations and sectors. These cases: a) outline practical examples of leading sustainability related change, b) enable students to compare and critique leadership and change theories to organisational/management practices.

The module provides students with an insight into select economic theories and concepts and their practical application.Students will learn about the relationship (and associated complexities) between economics and sustainability considering this relationship from a variety of perspectives e.g., neoclassical and environmental approaches.The module seeks to progress the students' insights by introducing contemporary and innovative approaches to the subject area, for example steady-state, circular and doughnut economics.

The module provides a foundation for exploring the relationship between organisations (public and private) and sustainability. Key issues are covered including: - the origins and evolution of sustainability at a societal and organisational level - the factors prompting sustainable practices and the business case for sustainability- key theories, frameworks and models related to sustainability - case studies outlining differing approaches/issues related to sustainability and the adoption of sustainable business practices.Through studying the module, students will appreciate the complexities associated with sustainability and be able to discuss and debate these complexities in an informed and critical manner.
