Syllabus

• Introduction to business planning and management, functions and classification of engineering organisations
• Important concepts of corporate business law in engineering
• Introduction to finance and accounting
• Financial statements, Shareholders, IPOs, The Stock Market
• Sources of finance, budgeting techniques and types of costs
• Elements of investment decision making
• Introduction to Marketing
• Writing a Business Plan

Case studies from a representative range of Engineering sectors will be used, where appropriate, to illustrate these principles.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:


• understand business planning functions in various engineering organisations and show awareness of the corporate legal framework governing engineering organisation activities
• demonstrate familiarity with basic finance and accounting principles
• interpret basic financial statements and evaluate objectives and usefulness of financial reporting
• investigate different sources of finance available to engineering organisations as well as with budgeting techniques and types of costs in engineering
• justify appropriate investment decisions by applying main investment appraisal techniques
• adopt and practice transfer of basic marketing principles to an engineering organisation context, including the concepts of customer value, business markets, communication techniques and digital marketing
• understand how to use a wide range of information sources and demonstrate proficiency in contributing to or leading the development and execution of a business plan
