Machine learning is a rapidly developing research area which takes an algorithmic approach to identifying patterns and statistical regularities in data without or with limited human intervention, often with the aim of supporting decision making. In this module you will learn to apply a number of machine learning techniques that are widely used in industry, government, and other large organisations. You will learn how the different approaches relate to and are motivated by statistics and will gain practical experience in the application of these techniques on real and simulated datasets.

The module introduces the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), taking a strongly integrative and state of the art approach based on deep neural networks. In line with the use of AI in key sectors (e.g. finance, health, law), there is an emphasis on the combination of multiple input modalities – specifically, combining images, text and structured data. Students gain hands-on experience in developing AI systems to address real-world problems, providing the knowledge and skills necessary to develop an AI system as part of an MSc project.

This module is designed to help students develop and demonstrate the skills required to carry out a substantial individual project in a chosen aspect of Artificial Intelligence. Core skills for conducting the individual project are developed through guided online learning.
